This issue’s design is itself an act of criticism and personal revenge: on the current state of mass market literary spheres, on trendy Instagram design culture, on intellectualism, on seriousness, and on the shapes of expectation. A feature of the covers of Volumes 2.1 & 2.2 is when stacked on their side, the spine ombre carries from the “2.1” to “2.2”. My hope is to destructively look at the invented exclusivity of posh-intellect and propel a poking approach, hopefully lava-lamping into knock-knock joke poetics. The stars, some of which are guest illustrated by the hand of Ro Gingrich, that act as a mascot through this issue, are a comment on CRB’s tactical mission to test what criticism can be by satirically showing what it’s not. Although physically a departure, this issue is as grounded as ever in the spirit of experiment, of adaptability to constraint, of approachability to the new. All to say—there were budget constraints.

Revamped and ready to serialize, more than double the size of the Volume 00, Volume 01 holds 24 people and 22 pieces of new and republished Cleveland Review of Books writing. I was responsible for art direction, typesetting, and creating all visual artworks (whatever shape that takes: photo illustration, collage, drawing, public domain destruction) to accompany these pieces, as well as all CRB promotional material and adverts in and around the publication. In addition, I oversaw the printing process, working with Outlandish Press (a local Cleveland printer) to find pretty materials for production. Below are the covers and some of my favorite spreads.

CRB, a primarily online criticism journal, is now entering the print game. As the sole artist and designer on this project, I was given a lot of freedom to conceptualize a container, typeset text, and create artworks for each of the 12 pieces included in this volume, creating a book in the shape of a magazine. Below are a select bunch of spreads.
